A little while ago we asked our EWers about the lessons they've learn as expatriates; understandably, as a lot of our forum users are here in the UAE, a lot of replies included quips about life in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the Middle East in general.
Nonetheless without a doubt, there's lots of valuable lessons to be learnt while living as an expatriate, no matter where you are... Whether in the UAE or elsewhere!
We got lots of responses from our loyal EWers on our forum, and so I'd like to share my thoughts on some of the ones shared...
1. Being multilingual is truly a great skill
I had paid attention in my German lessons at high school, but then again I don't live in Germany at the moment. Everyone in Dubai says they'd love to learn Arabic at one point, myself included, I just haven't got around to it yet.
2. If you're homesick, don't listen to Whitney Houston songs
This one made us laugh out loud! We agree!
3. Everyone should be treated equally no matter their race or colour
We completely agree; no matter where you are living in the world, treat individuals with the love and respect that they deserve as a human being, and appreciate their differences to you.
4. The grass isn't always greener
It's sad to admit, but it's true... A lot of expats will struggle with the first few years of their "new life" abroad, and it's completely understandable. Perhaps you're unable to adapt to your new surroundings, or you simply can't adapt to local customs and laws. Whatever the reason, it's okay to feel upset about it and it's okay to do something. You can always say you tried!
5. There are many ways of achieving the same thing, and that your way is not necessarily the best way
This is very true and an extremely good point, and a valuable lesson for anyone, living anywhere.
